About Acnetoin Plus Gel
Acnetoin Plus Gel is a topical prescription medicine used for the treatment of acne. It is a combination gel that contains two different active ingredients:
- Clindamycin: An antibiotic.
- Isotretinoin: A retinoid (a form of Vitamin A).
How It Works
This gel attacks acne in two different ways:
- Clindamycin (The Antibiotic): This ingredient penetrates the skin to kill the specific bacteria that cause acne (Propionibacterium acnes). This helps to reduce the number of infected, inflammatory pimples (lumps, redness, and swelling).
- Isotretinoin (The Retinoid): This ingredient works by reducing the production of oil (sebum) in the skin. This mild drying effect helps prevent pores from getting clogged. It also promotes faster skin cell renewal, which helps to unblock pores and prevent new pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads from forming.
Primary Use & Benefit
- Treatment of Acne: This combination gel helps to treat and control acne by simultaneously killing acne-causing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and decreasing oil production to keep pores clear.
How to Use This Medicine
This medicine is for external use only. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.
- Apply at Night: This gel should be applied once daily in the evening (at bedtime). The Isotretinoin in it makes your skin highly sensitive to sunlight.
- Preparation: Gently wash your face with a mild, non-medicated cleanser and gently pat your skin dry.
- Use a Pea-Sized Amount: Squeeze a very small amount (about the size of a pea) onto your fingertip. This is enough for your entire face.
- Application: Apply a thin layer over the entire affected area (not just as a spot treatment on individual pimples). This helps prevent new breakouts.
- Avoid Sensitive Areas: Be very careful to avoid the delicate skin around your eyes, the corners of your mouth, and the creases of your nose.
- Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the gel.
⚠️ Important Precautions & Warnings
CRITICAL: Pregnancy & Birth Defect Warning
- DO NOT USE this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- The Isotretinoin in this gel is a retinoid, which is known to be teratogenic (can cause severe birth defects).
- Women of childbearing potential must use an effective form of contraception while using this medication.
- High Sun Sensitivity: This gel makes your skin extremely sensitive to sunlight.
- You must use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every single day, even if it is cloudy.
- Wear protective clothing (like a hat) and limit sun exposure.
- Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds completely.
- Colitis Warning: The antibiotic Clindamycin can, in rare cases, be absorbed through the skin and cause severe intestinal problems (colitis). Stop using the gel and contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe or persistent diarrhea or abdominal cramps.
- Cosmetic Procedures: Avoid face waxing, laser treatments, and chemical peels. This gel makes the skin fragile and can lead to tearing or burns.
- Do Not Apply On: Do not apply to broken, cut, sunburned, or eczematous (inflamed) skin.
- The “Purge”: Your acne may appear to get worse before it gets better. This is common in the first few weeks as the gel brings underlying blemishes to the surface. Do not stop treatment; this phase usually subsides after a few weeks.
Common Side Effects
It is very common to experience some mild-to-moderate side effects during the first few weeks as your skin adjusts.
- Dry skin, peeling, and flaking
- Erythema (skin redness)
- Mild itching
- Stinging or burning sensation upon application
Consult your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away.
