About Skinshine Cream (Triple-Combination)

Skinshine Cream is a prescription medication used for the short-term treatment of melasma (dark, discolored patches on the skin). It is a combination of three different medicines:

  1. Hydroquinone: A skin-lightening agent.
  2. Mometasone: A potent corticosteroid (a steroid).
  3. Tretinoin: A retinoid (a form of Vitamin A).

How It Works

Each ingredient has a specific job:

  • Hydroquinone: This is the “skin lightening” medicine. It works by reducing the amount of melanin (the pigment that causes dark spots) in the skin.
  • Mometasone: This is a steroid. It helps by blocking the body’s inflammatory response, quickly reducing any redness, swelling, and itching.
  • Tretinoin: This is a form of Vitamin A. It helps the skin to renew itself more quickly, which helps to shed the darker, pigmented skin cells and allows the hydroquinone to work more effectively.

Primary Use & Benefit

  • Treatment of Melasma: This cream is designed to lighten the dark patches on the skin often caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone medicine, or skin injury. It can also help reduce the redness or irritation associated with melasma.

How to Use This Medicine

This medicine is for external use only. Always follow your doctor’s exact instructions.

  1. Apply at Night: This cream should typically be applied once daily in the evening, as Tretinoin and Hydroquinone make your skin highly sensitive to sunlight.
  2. Preparation: Wash your face with a mild, gentle cleanser and gently pat your skin dry.
  3. Wait: Wait 20 to 30 minutes until your skin is completely dry before applying the cream.
  4. Use a Pea-Sized Amount: Squeeze a very small amount (about the size of a pea) onto your fingertip and apply a thin layer to the affected dark patches only.
  5. Avoid: Do not apply it to unaffected skin, and be very careful to avoid the sensitive areas around your eyes, mouth, and the creases of your nose.
  6. Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly after application.

⚠️ Important Precautions & Warnings

CRITICAL: Steroid & Pregnancy Warnings

  1. Short-Term Use Only: This cream contains a potent steroid (Mometasone). It should NOT be used for a long period (e.g., not for more than 4-8 weeks unless directed by your doctor). Long-term use on the face can cause serious, permanent side effects like skin thinning, stretch marks, and visible blood vessels.
  2. Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: DO NOT USE this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Tretinoin is known to cause severe birth defects.

  • High Sun Sensitivity: This cream makes your skin extremely sensitive to sunlight.
    • You must use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every single day, even if it is cloudy.
    • Wear a hat and protective clothing when outdoors.
    • Sun exposure will make your melasma worse and completely counteract the effects of the cream.
  • Rebound Pigmentation: Do not stop this medicine suddenly. Your doctor will likely have you taper off (use it less frequently) to prevent the melasma from returning, sometimes even darker than before.
  • Irritation: Do not apply to broken, cut, or sunburned skin.

Common Side Effects

It is common to experience some irritation when first starting this cream. Consult your doctor if these persist or are severe.

  • Mild burning, stinging, or itching
  • Redness
  • Dryness and peeling of the skin

Stop using the cream and contact your doctor if you notice signs of skin thinning, new white spots, or severe irritation.
